We often get customers asking us what the vital steps are to successful online marketing once they have finished building, updating or redesiging their websites.
The question is a great one because in many ways the rules of marketing continue to change, propelled forward by advances in web technologies, low cost netbook style computers, and increases in connectivity speed. Because of these changes, the new marketing reality is that more and more of your prospects are out looking for your products and services today on the internet and they are either easily finding your website or they are not. Thus, getting to the top of the search results pages is one of the core precepts for any succesful online marketing strategy.
Getting Found is Getting Harder…
The best time to take up online marketing is now, as adoption rates of aggressive internet marketing strategies are still low amongst most all categories of businesses. Additionally, beyond the question of timing are the potential barriers to entry that your competitors can create by being first to aggressively market online – these barriers include: a shortened learning curve, more resource and time devoted to their website and finally, an appreciation of what is at stake backed by a strategic outlook designed to protect the online exposure they have earned. With all this in mind, Wakefly has put together three essential tips to get you started on thr right path.
- Build the best possible website that you can. The stronger or more compelling the content you create for your site increases your chances that others notice your website and link back to it. Google is essentially an old fashioned popularity contest, and the winners of the contest – namely, those with highest rankings for any given keyword phrase – are those with the most online votes. In this case – “votes” are quality and quantity of the links pointing to a given website from other third party sites on the internet. Thus, creating content on your website that delivers value to browsers and not merely creating a static online brochure is paramount for succesful online marketing in 2010. Value creation in the form of content can take many forms including: how to articles, informational blogs, FAQ sections, savings calculators, and anything else that improves the visitors satisfaction and experience on your website, increasing the chances they link back to your site. Great websites that posses great content and create great user experiences essentially market themselves.
- Leverage social media sites and online press releases distribution sites to drive targeted visitors to your website and to assist in winning the link “popularity contest” on the major search engines. YouTube, Facebook and Twitter are some of the most heavily trafficked sites in the world – and are completely free places to share thought leadership, videos, client testimonials, successs stories and so much more. On the press release side of the ledger, make it part of your strategy to bypass traditional media and trade publications by writing press releases directly for the end user or prospect and then work to submit press releases to sites like PrWeb and BusinessWire. Google and Yahoo! Will treat them as news – giving you valuable visitors – plus, more “votes” in the popularity contest as syndicated press releases link back to your web assets.
- Take advantage of the new virtual phone book. Let’s face it the phone book has moved online. I haven’t used the Yellow Pages in 5 years nor do I think I even have a hard copy at home or in the office. If you’re a small business you can get free exposure and backlinks on Yahoo! Local, Google Local, Bing Local, Ask City, CitySearch and Yelp. If you’re a larger business or B2B, consider a directory listing in Business.com, the largest B2B search engine , or in the Yahoo! Directory.
These tactics should help your website begin to get traction and represent the nucleus of a successful online marketing campaign. Good luck with your efforts in 2010.
